Snow Play and Overnight at Hutchinson Lodge with Madison Park Academy

Sledding, snow-shoeing and general fun in the snow coupled with an overnight at the Sierra Club's Hutchinson Lodge is what we have planned for this special trip.  Join the high school Outdoor Adventure Club of Madison Park Academy on their third trip of the 2017/2018 school year.  If you have not been to this lodge this is your chance for a very fun trip and evening.  We will definitely need drivers who have chains (in case of snowy weather).  We will also need help with gear and cooking so volunteers should definitely sign up to join this great group.

LHS Point Reyes Backpacking!

Hi Folks!

Please join us for a 3 day, 2 night backpacking trip in Point Reyes National Seashore with my lovely students from Leadership High School, San Francisco!

On Monday March 19th we will meet at LHS-SF (350 Seneca Ave, SF CA 94112) at 8 am.

Then we will head out Bear Valley in Point Reyes and enjoy a 6 mile backpack into Group site #8 in Coast Camp.

Tuesday March 20th we will walk about 4 miles to Sky Camp, where we will stay in Group camp #3.

Wednesday March 21st we will hike 3 miles out to Bear Valley. Then we will head back to LHS-SF, returning no later than 2 pm (probably earlier).

This is a part of our "Week Without Walls" curriculum where students get out of regular classes and I get to teach a backpacking class :)

At this time I am unsure how many students I will have. We have room in the group camps for up to 25, but I feel it's likely we may have about 10 or 12 or so students.

ICO Volunteers are needed, ESPECIALLY DRIVERS.

I will likely rent an 8 passenger van, but I would still need 1 or 2 more ICO drivers to ferry students, ICO volunters and food & Gear.

No Volunteer protocols required for LHS, except to be an ICO volunteer in good standing.

Please be in touch and let me know if you'd like to help, especially if you can drive!!!

Thanks

ICO City hike and lunch in SF

Our leadership team is looking forward to the start of the school year and getting organized for what we hope to be lots of trips this fall.

For something a little different we're planning an urban exploration hike in North Beach and Telegraph Hill.  Hidden stairways, architecture, stunning views, it's all there!

We'll meet near the Embarcadro BART at 10:45, do a 2 hour hike and return for lunch at 1:00. We encourage everyone to do the hike, but you can also just join for lunch.  Our leaders will preview planned outings, and we'll leave time for group discussion.

There are places to buy drinks and food in Justin Herman plaza, but probaly best to bring a lunch and avoid the crowds.

We will meet at 10:45 sharp at Sue Bierman Park on the little knoll just north of the Vaillancourt fountain.  Walk down Drumm street from BART.

Cheers,

East Oakland Boxing Association Day Hike

The East Oakland Boxing Association runs a summer program for youths aged 9-15 at Reach Academy, an Oakland Elementar school located at 98th Avenue and Bancroft.  This trip is one of four day hikes that we have planned--for July 10, July17, July 24, and July 25.  All four are posted on the ICO schedule, and all four need additional ICO support.

This trip, tentatively to hike around Lafayette Rervoir, an EBMUD open space area near Lafayette.  The trail is scenic, with views of the lake and opportunities to view varied forms of wildlife.

We will depart from the EIOBA site at 9:00 am and return before 3:00 pm.   This is a great opportunity to do what ICO is all about--supporting a lively group of urban youths in experiencing the outdoors and nearby nature.

East Oakland Boxing Association Summer Program Day Hike

The East Oakland Boxing Association runs a summer program for youths aged 9-15 at Reach Academy, an Oakland Elementar school located at 98th Avenue and Bancroft.  We have planned a day outing on Monday, July 10, 2017, to a nearby East Bay Regional Park, Inspiration Point in Tilden, where we will hike to Wildcat Peak and eat a picnic lunch along the way.  The route offers sensational views of the greater Bay Area, and the 'doable' challenge of hiking to the top of a local peak.  We will depart from the Reach Academy site shortly after 9:00 am and return by 3:00 pm.  The trip needs at least four volunteers/drivers to transport up to 20 youth.  This is a great opportunity to do what ICO is all about--supporting a lively group of urban youths in experiencing the outdoors and nearby nature.

Maiden voyage with YEP & The Central American Refugee Committee of Oakland

ICO San Francisco and the Youth Empowerment Program (YEP), in collaboration with The Central American Refugee Committee of Oakland (CRECE), will take our first day hike together in Roberts Regional Recreation Area in Oakland. Roberts Regional Recreation Area is an 82-acre area and a popular place for family and group picknicking. It's known for its lush setting in a grove of fragrant second growth redood trees and is surrounded on three sides by Redwood Regional Park.

We expect to have about 15 youth (perhaps joined by family members) that are elementary to middle school aged. The youth are mostly bi-lingual in English and Spanish and their parents are mostly fluent in Spanish only. CRECE has been working in the community since 1990 and has strong community ties, while YEP is a relatively new program that brings a fresh set of ideas and a youth empowerment model to the partnership.

Since this is our first hike together, we plan to do a total of 2 miles with several stops to take in the views, play a game or two and have a picnic lunch. Adding more adventure to the day, we plan to board the 339 AC Transit bus from Fruitvale BART together and get dropped at the start of the trailhead. We'll hike one-way, all together connecting 3 trails, and end at the Chabot Space & Science Center where we'll catch the bus back to Fruitvale BART.

This group plans to start out with day hikes and hopefully progress to camping and maybe backpacking trips later on as our partnership develops. We're so excited to be able to offer these families a fun outdoor activity and show them how easy it is to access nearby green places on their own via public transportation.

Spanish Speaking Citizens Foundation

Start at Dimond Park (near MacArthur & Fruitvale) and hike along Sausal Creek up to Joaquin Miller Park. Diamond park is not too far from location of their after-school program in the Fruitvale.

They will be very surprised to see how close they are to a beautiful hike, next to a beautiful creek (especially with recent rains). Once we reach Hwy 13, we will have option to hike further into Joaquin Miller/Redwood Park or go back. It will be good for them to learn where this beautiful trail is and how close it is to the Fruitvale.

Kids are high-school from Fremont and Oakland High Schools. Most speak Spanish but that has never been a barrier for our Certified  leaders and volunteers.

Kids very much want to practice their English.

It just all seems to work out!

Siena Youth Center Snow Weekend

"Siena Youth Center rocks again!"  March 24-26, teens and staff from the Siena Youth Center will travel to the Sierra Club's own, venerable Hutchinson Lodge at Soda Springs in the mountains.

A few hardy volunteers sought -- will need good snow clothing, a vehicle to drive, and the usual positive, adventurous spirit.  A warm sleeping bag as well, tho' we will be sleeping indoors.  Please contact Michael Cadigan   ( cadpack@comcast.net  )

"Change Makers", "Youth Initiative", "Bulldog Riders", "Outdoor Leadership" --- these are the names of some of the youth programs organized by the Siena Youth Center and with whom ICO has done previous hikes or overnights. This is an inspiring group with which to volunteer.

Tamiscal High School Snow Camping

We drove up and camped at the Meiss Lake Sno-Park on Carson Pass Friday night, but the weather forecast of heavy snow on Saturday persuaded us to get back in the vans and drive down to Hope Valley to avoid being unable to drive out on Sunday. There was plenty of snow down low anyway. The weather was actually pretty good all day Saturday, and we didn't have to put a tarp over the kitchen, allowing us to have a campfire. The storm hit at about 10:00 PM. The tents were completely buried in the morning. The kids who slept in a snow cave had to dig themselves out. It was an adventure for them. Getting back home was slow. Carson Pass, Luther Pass, and Highway 89 down to Markleeville were closed. We waited in Hope Valley an hour or so until Luther opened. Visibility was almost nil on Luther. Getting over Echo Summit was easier, but slow. Interstate 80 over Donner was closed, so Echo was getting traffic from Reno and the North Shore resorts.

Tennessee Valley Warm-Up Hike with Madison Park Academy Adventure Club

Join us for a winter warm-up hike in the beautiful Marin Headlands.  Our current plan is to hike on the Tennessee Valley Trail to Tennessee Cove where we will stop for lunch and some fun time on the beach.  Time permitting, we may add a hike up to Coyote Ridge for dramatic views of the Pacific Ocean before returning home.  This is the Madison Park Academy Adventure Club's inaugural hike with 11th and 12th graders who are planning to do monthly hikes culminating in a backpacking trip this spring.  Help us help this great group of high school students build their adventure club and get to know a really great group.  We will definitely need some volunteer drivers.

Oakland High School Adventure Club Urban Hike in San Francisco

The Oakland High School Adventure Club has planned a hike across San Francisco, including Golden Gate Park, using BART to cross the Bay and SF Muni to return to BART at the end of its hike,.  About 15 Club members are expected to participate, a lively group of experienced hikers.  Our route will touch on points of interest downtown, and then meander through Golden Gate Park, perhaps all the way to the Sea.

We think we have sufficient adult participation, but in the event that student participation surges, we could use another volunteer to be available should need arise as the hike date approaches.
