Oyster Bay Day Hike with YEP

ICO and east Oakland's Youth Empowerment Program are teaming up for the second time to explore and enjoy our bayfront! We'll take public transportation to Oyster Bay Regional Shoreline in San Leandro where we'll walk along one of our area's most iconic and unifiying bodies of water, and enjoy a picnic lunch along it's shores. We'll be sure to learn how important the Bay is to the ecology of our area. Who knows, we may even stumble upon a curious display of public art!

East Oakland Boxing Association Day Hike

The East Oakland Boxing Association runs a summer program for youths aged 9-15 at Reach Academy, an Oakland Elementar school located at 98th Avenue and Bancroft.  This trip is one of four day hikes that we have planned--for July 10, July17, July 24, and July 25.  All four are posted on the ICO schedule, and all four need additional ICO support.

This trip, tentatively to hike around Lafayette Rervoir, an EBMUD open space area near Lafayette.  The trail is scenic, with views of the lake and opportunities to view varied forms of wildlife.

We will depart from the EIOBA site at 9:00 am and return before 3:00 pm.   This is a great opportunity to do what ICO is all about--supporting a lively group of urban youths in experiencing the outdoors and nearby nature.

East Oakland Boxing Association Summer Program Day Hike

The East Oakland Boxing Association runs a summer program for youths aged 9-15 at Reach Academy, an Oakland Elementar school located at 98th Avenue and Bancroft.  We have planned a day outing on Monday, July 10, 2017, to a nearby East Bay Regional Park, Inspiration Point in Tilden, where we will hike to Wildcat Peak and eat a picnic lunch along the way.  The route offers sensational views of the greater Bay Area, and the 'doable' challenge of hiking to the top of a local peak.  We will depart from the Reach Academy site shortly after 9:00 am and return by 3:00 pm.  The trip needs at least four volunteers/drivers to transport up to 20 youth.  This is a great opportunity to do what ICO is all about--supporting a lively group of urban youths in experiencing the outdoors and nearby nature.

Maiden voyage with YEP & The Central American Refugee Committee of Oakland

ICO San Francisco and the Youth Empowerment Program (YEP), in collaboration with The Central American Refugee Committee of Oakland (CRECE), will take our first day hike together in Roberts Regional Recreation Area in Oakland. Roberts Regional Recreation Area is an 82-acre area and a popular place for family and group picknicking. It's known for its lush setting in a grove of fragrant second growth redood trees and is surrounded on three sides by Redwood Regional Park.

We expect to have about 15 youth (perhaps joined by family members) that are elementary to middle school aged. The youth are mostly bi-lingual in English and Spanish and their parents are mostly fluent in Spanish only. CRECE has been working in the community since 1990 and has strong community ties, while YEP is a relatively new program that brings a fresh set of ideas and a youth empowerment model to the partnership.

Since this is our first hike together, we plan to do a total of 2 miles with several stops to take in the views, play a game or two and have a picnic lunch. Adding more adventure to the day, we plan to board the 339 AC Transit bus from Fruitvale BART together and get dropped at the start of the trailhead. We'll hike one-way, all together connecting 3 trails, and end at the Chabot Space & Science Center where we'll catch the bus back to Fruitvale BART.

This group plans to start out with day hikes and hopefully progress to camping and maybe backpacking trips later on as our partnership develops. We're so excited to be able to offer these families a fun outdoor activity and show them how easy it is to access nearby green places on their own via public transportation.

Spanish Speaking Citizens Foundation

Start at Dimond Park (near MacArthur & Fruitvale) and hike along Sausal Creek up to Joaquin Miller Park. Diamond park is not too far from location of their after-school program in the Fruitvale.

They will be very surprised to see how close they are to a beautiful hike, next to a beautiful creek (especially with recent rains). Once we reach Hwy 13, we will have option to hike further into Joaquin Miller/Redwood Park or go back. It will be good for them to learn where this beautiful trail is and how close it is to the Fruitvale.

Kids are high-school from Fremont and Oakland High Schools. Most speak Spanish but that has never been a barrier for our Certified  leaders and volunteers.

Kids very much want to practice their English.

It just all seems to work out!

Siena Youth Center Snow Weekend

"Siena Youth Center rocks again!"  March 24-26, teens and staff from the Siena Youth Center will travel to the Sierra Club's own, venerable Hutchinson Lodge at Soda Springs in the mountains.

A few hardy volunteers sought -- will need good snow clothing, a vehicle to drive, and the usual positive, adventurous spirit.  A warm sleeping bag as well, tho' we will be sleeping indoors.  Please contact Michael Cadigan   ( cadpack@comcast.net  )

"Change Makers", "Youth Initiative", "Bulldog Riders", "Outdoor Leadership" --- these are the names of some of the youth programs organized by the Siena Youth Center and with whom ICO has done previous hikes or overnights. This is an inspiring group with which to volunteer.

Tamiscal High School Snow Camping

We drove up and camped at the Meiss Lake Sno-Park on Carson Pass Friday night, but the weather forecast of heavy snow on Saturday persuaded us to get back in the vans and drive down to Hope Valley to avoid being unable to drive out on Sunday. There was plenty of snow down low anyway. The weather was actually pretty good all day Saturday, and we didn't have to put a tarp over the kitchen, allowing us to have a campfire. The storm hit at about 10:00 PM. The tents were completely buried in the morning. The kids who slept in a snow cave had to dig themselves out. It was an adventure for them. Getting back home was slow. Carson Pass, Luther Pass, and Highway 89 down to Markleeville were closed. We waited in Hope Valley an hour or so until Luther opened. Visibility was almost nil on Luther. Getting over Echo Summit was easier, but slow. Interstate 80 over Donner was closed, so Echo was getting traffic from Reno and the North Shore resorts.

Holiday Dinner Party

All ICO volunteers are heartily invited to our annual ICO pre-holiday dinner party.  This is one of the few opportunities throughout the year we have to get together in person, and it's a great way for new volunteers to meet veteran volunteers and leaders.

Jeff and Susan will be hosting at our home on Athol Ave in Oakland near Lake Merritt, and a very short Uber ride (or car pool)  from BART.

Dinner will be potluck and I will serving my traditional inner city sangria.  We will start at 6:00 so folks who have plans for later in the evening can stop by beforehand.

We will also reprise our wacky white elephant gift exchange.  Bring a wrapped item in good condition that you no longer use.  Bring a gift to receive one; so be creative in selecting an item that someone might be able to use and more important,  get a laugh from.

Though it may be to imagine a festive mood at this point, we DO look forward to seeing everyone.  So SAVE THE DATE, and look for the Evite with more details.

Siena Youth Center (SYC) is a dynamic, community-involved Agency serving youth in th Fair Oaks neighborhood in Redwood City. They focus on youth leadership & empowerment -- ICO has assisted on nmerous overnights and day hikes in support of this great group.

What was originally to be a overnight campout on Saturday Sept. 17 needed to be amended to a day hike. Within the SYC, the "Change Makers" are a high school leadership component of SYC. One way they contribute is as tutors to younger students at the Center. This day hike begins the Chang Makers year-long leadershp program with a team-building hike in the beautfiul redwood forest alongside Pescadero Creek County Park in San Mateo County.   Easy, 6 miles of trail; big pay off in beauty, solitude and fun!
